Wow. Isn't it amazing that people have spent decades studying this stuff and compiling statistical evidence, experiments, and all manner of research. All it took for Robertson was a few hot days.
How much energy have we spent to teach the science to people? Are some people just going to ignore science no matter what?
I'll bet more Americans became convinced of global warming from Katrina, Rita, and this summer than from Al Gore and all the rest of the scientific evidence...
yup, i'm sure you're right. science is this insubstantial thing to so many people, but a regular heat wave with the specific context is something tangible that people react to. humans as evolutionary animals are trained to react to what they see and to make inferences from that. science goes against our instincts which is why people who aren't trained are much less likely to believe or understand scentific results.
Energista's regular contributors include Darrell Gerber, Joe Plummer, Gina Rutter (V), Nick, and christopher mitchell (shadoweyes). We are all current students or alumni of the Hubert Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. We focused on science, technology, and energy policy for each of our Master's degree.
